Grandparents raising grandchildren, or 'gramping', is a challenging yet rewarding experience, and San Diego County is taking steps to support these caregivers. The annual 'gramping' campout, held at Dos Picos County Park in Ramona, offers a unique opportunity for kinship caregivers to connect, share experiences, and build a supportive community. This year, 68 caregivers participated in the free event, which included a range of activities and a service project. The campout aims to address the isolation grandparents may feel and provide a platform for them to connect with others facing similar challenges. With approximately 18,000 grandparents raising their grandchildren in San Diego County, the need for such initiatives is evident. Many of these caregivers face financial strain, physical limitations, and housing instability, making events like the 'gramping' campout crucial for their well-being. The County of San Diego's Child and Family Well Being Department recognizes the importance of these caregivers and offers various programs, services, and connections to community partners to support them.
